Reflection (on Water)

Assignment #27:  Take a photo of a reflection on water.

I'd like to get smarter about the type of light that makes the best reflections.  It seems like I could do a better job of getting in the right place at the right time for these shots.

Back Lighting

Assignment #20:  Take a picture with a backlit subject.

Pointing your camera towards your primary source of light is just asking for trouble, right?

Side Lighting

Assignment #14: Take a photo with the primary source of light off to one side or the other.

The key, for me, is to see the light.

Shadows and Highlights

Assignment #8:  Take a photo in which the shadows and highlights either are the subject or are absolutely vital to creating interest.

I sometimes think this is one the least-specific assignments on my list but it's something I need to learn to look for.

Silhouette

Assignment #5:  Capture a silhouette.

To be honest, if I get a neat silhouette, it's probably a happy accident.  In looking at silhouette shots that others have taken, I'm much more drawn to images that seem "found" or candid than those with posed people or objects in front of a sunset or composite images with unnaturally large moons.

Reflection (Other than Water)

Assignment #3: Photograph a reflection on something other than water.

It's not that photographing a reflection on water is necessarily easy; it just might be the first place the imagination goes when thinking about reflections.  So for this assignment, find a reflection somewhere else:  a mirror or window, some polished wood, someone's eye, whatever you find.
